Beautifully Natural: A Granite Kitchen
Backsplash
The materials used for remodeling a kitchen can really
establish the raise in value of a house, and granite kitchen
backsplash is one way of doing that. It is a classic, yet
contemporary look that has durability and will last for years
if taken care of properly. There are many different styles and
colors to choose from with this natural material, which makes
it very simple to find a look that will go with the rest of the
kitchen. This makes it easy to use even for the amateur
decorator is work with.
Having a good backsplash is important in a kitchen for
working purposes first of all. The excessive heat from cooking
along with splashing from grease and other foods can damage a
wall if it is not protected. While there are many different
types and styles to choose from, granite kitchen backsplash can
really give the needed protection.
The main draw for using granite is how well it
performs in the kitchen. Granite is a very hard material
that almost cannot be chipped or dinged. Also, the rock
can take excessive amounts of heat as well. Another
important consideration when putting in a backsplash that
sunlight can hit is whether it will fade with ultraviolet.
True granite kitchen backsplash will not. The only real
issue with using granite is that because it is a natural
rock, it is a bit porous. This means that any spills on it
should be wiped up quickly, though if it has been sealed
it will help to avoid any seeping in.
There are four main types of finishes that people can choose
to work within their kitchens when using granite for their
kitchen backsplash. The two that are most common and easiest to
take care of are honed and then polished. A honed finish is
when the rock has been worked to have a smoother surface. It is
not really reflective, but has more of a dull look. For that
really shiny appearance, getting a polished surface is what to
pick. This also makes the granite less porous so that will help
with the wear. The other two types that are just as beautiful,
though with a rougher, natural rocky appearance is flamed or
brushed. The main thing to consider is how much wear you expect
that area of backsplash to have, and how it will look with the
area around it. Some may even choose to use a combination of
textures to add depth to the total appearance.
Taking care of a granite kitchen splash is fairly easy.
Usually a simple warm water and light soap detergent will wipe
up the surface quite well. In order to keep the rock from
absorbing any unwanted cooking smells or other substances that
can affect porous material, the surface will need to get a
sealer put on it about twice a year. The sealer will penetrate
the rock to protect it. Other than that, the only maintenance
worry is to keep very acidic cleaners away from the actual
surface. These materials have the potential to stain the
granite.
