Mosaic Kitchen Backsplash: Patterns to Light Up Your Eyes

A mosaic kitchen backsplash goes behind your kitchen sink on the wall and is actually there to prevent water from being splashed on your wall. They can be made of many different types of materials but mosaic backsplashes have been gaining in the popularity area as of late. Many people put them up for the aesthetics it gives the area around the sink however, originally they were intended as a backsplash - to keep your wall area free of water.

The choice of patterns and colors from which you can choose are so much more beautiful today than previously. The modern look it gives your kitchen is quite pleasing. Buying it pre-made is one route you can go but there you may also make your own backsplash.

Often people have odds and ends of favorite dishes they may want to incorporate into a backsplash for their kitchen. You know the ones that you really loved the pattern but a plate or two have been broken. You really hate to get rid of the remaining ones because this was a favorite pattern. This is one way of keeping the dishes without having partial place settings clogging up your cabinets.

The disadvantages of using mosaic are the placement of the tiles. If you do not get them placed exactly right when putting them on the wall, the adhesion is pretty fast and if the tile is not even taking it off and starting over is your only option. This can be a tiresome job.

The cleaning of the tiles is easy but do not use anything that is harsh or that would scratch the tiles. You cannot use typical cleaners that you would think of using in the kitchen because some are abrasive and will leave scratches on your tiles.

There are various types of ceramic tiles that you may use for your backsplash. A quite popular type of mosaic tile is marble mosaic. This is a dark tile and has darker pieces within the space as well. There are solid mosaics which are made from marble, granite, limestone and basalt. Glass mosaic tiles come in different varieties. One type is quite colorful and is called Smalti glass. Another type is mosaic fused glass tile. Using flat pieces of glass which are cut into different shaped and then put in a furnace and fired are used to make this tile.

Maintaining your mosaic tile is not difficult. When cleaning is needed use a cleaner that is non-abrasive and use a soft rag to wipe it clean. Do not use abrasive cleaners or highly potent chemical cleaners as this might damage the grout. You also do not want to use something that will strip the color from the tiles. Mosaic tiles can be quite beautiful and your goal is to keep them that way so make sure you use only a mild cleaner.
