Kitchen Lighting Design – The 4 Types Of Lighting You Should Have

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

For many people the last thing they will think about when thinking of redecorating their kitchen is the type of kitchen lighting design that they want and normally this the first thing that they will cut from their budget. But if you want your kitchen and function well then good lighting is a must. A good kitchen lighting design plan will blend into the architectural and decorative details of the room.

When it comes to uses lights in a kitchen the most common mistake made by many people is that they try to light the entire room by just using a ceiling mounted fixture. But unfortunately this will results in the room being visually overpowered by the light fixture and even recessed lighting isn’t much better.

Therefore plan for the layered look and kitchen that is well lit will layer and blend 4 different kinds of lights and any kitchen redesign or remodel or new build should include the following:-

1. Task Lighting. This is the workhouse element of kitchen lighting and will provide adequate light for when you are chopping vegetables or reading recipes. The optimum place for such lighting is between a person’s head and the actual work surface (and that is why lighting located below cabinets on the walls are very effective).

2. Ambient Lighting. This will create a warm glow to your kitchen and will fill the room as well as soften shadows and makes those entering the kitchen feeling instantly welcome. If you have cabinets which do not reach up to the ceiling then ambient lighting can be placed there. Of the four kinds of lighting you can include in your kitchen ambient is the most overlooked.

3. Accent Lighting. This will give depth and dimension to any kitchen and accent lighting is those fixtures which are placed inside a glassed front cabinet in order to illuminate the china, glassware or collectibles that are contained within it. Also recessed and adjustable low voltage fixtures used as spotlight art can be used as accent lighting.

4. Decorative Lighting. This type of lighting will add a sparkle to any space.

However when planning a kitchen lighting design is best if you plan ahead and you don’t have the money in your budget then install a series of pendants in the room but whilst the remodeling work is being carried out also have three junction boxes installed. Thus when you have the money available to purchase fixtures at a later date they can be easily added to your kitchen.

If you want, you can look for help from a professional kitchen renewal master or a carpenter; even so, you may want to carry out your own worksurface assembly. If you have clear instructions, you could find that it is relative easy to put in your own kitchen worktops, even if you do not have any DIY experience.  Many kitchen worktop materials come with directions, but if not, you would need to buy an instruction book for a comparatively affordable price.

What lighting should i use in a kitchen with a plank ceiling?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

I am remodeling a 1930s home with the original plank and beam ceiling. I’d like to put halogen lighting in the kitchen but am not sure what type of lighting I can use. The electrician has suggested track lighting, but i’d prefer something less obtrusive. there appears to be approx. 3 inches of space above the planks. does anyone have experience with this type of ceiling?

You can use fluorescent lamb, the one that is oblong. You can support the proportional substructure of fluorescent lamb at the planks of your ceiling. Usually, fluorescent lambs transmit a bride white light.

remodeling kitchen with new appliances. Forgot to check voltage. what is reasonable to pay for 220v upgrade?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

I am remodeling kitchen which involves upgrading appliances also. In the contract, I forgot to mention the voltage for Electric Oven. Now,what is reasonable to pay the contractor to upgrade the voltage from 110V to 220V?

Most electrical contractors charge a minimum of $350-$600 per job. If the electrical breaker box is near the kitchen then the minimum charge may cover the whole job. If wires need to be run a long way to get to the kitchen, then the charge could be much more.

Is it possible to buy stylish kitchen lighting that uses low-energy bulbs?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

They all seem to require halogen or small ordinary pearl bulbs. This goes for every plug-in silver/chrome spotlight system that catches my eye.
What are you saying Princess?
Or can anyone translate?

Yes, we have them in our kitchen, under lighting and ceiling lighting, we got all ours from B & Q and the local lighting shop. They are chrome and very trendy. Hope this helps

What kind of improvement expenses can I deduct when I sell a house I inherited a year ago?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

For example paint, lawn improvement, kitchen, bath remodel etc.

Any expense you put into the house is an expense as it is added to the basis of the cost of the house. The house basis is what it was worth the day that you inherited it. If you put paint roof drive kitchen or anything into the unit to improve it. then it is an expense…. I doubt that you will have to worry about it being worth more now than it was worth a year ago,, Find an appraiser that will give you a high appraisal for last year, and then sell it for less will make it a loss, and no taxes paid at all. Most property is not worth what it was last year according to so many pundits on TV.

Remodeling a kitchen – how long did it take, how much did it cost?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

My husband and I want to remodel our kitchen and would like to plan for the time and costs. How long did your kitchen remodel take and were there unexpected expenses you hadn’t counted for that came up? Were you happy with the outcome of the kitchen based on what you spent?

It took 3 months….. we did it ourselves and it cost 27,000$ Canadian….

Unexpected expenses: wiring that was no longer any good, having to buy more tiles, redoing the floor base to make it smooth for the new tiles (because pulling up the old ones ruined the floor underneath) and having to make a new countertop instead of just being able to relaminate the old one (the wood underneath the old laminate was rotting).

Yes… very happy with the outcome! We have just sold the house… paid it 133 500.00$ just over 5 years ago…. just sold it for 279 500.00$… I’d say that definitely covers the cost of the kitchen renovation!
