Under cabinet kitchen lighting?

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

I want to install lighting under my kitchen cabinets. Wiring it isn’t a problem, but I’m concerned about the aesthetics. My cabinets are flush at the bottom, so there is no over-hang to hide anything under the cabinets. I’m guessing I have to recess the lights.
If recessing, am I cutting right through the cabinets and into the bottom shelf? That doesn’t seem right.

The most popular type of undercabinet lighting on the market are the 1-4 bulb xenon line voltage surface mount options. Yes, they are surface mounted, however they are only 3/4-1" in height, and when they are placed in the middle of the cabinet (not up at the front) they are not very noticeable at all. Plus you can find them in either white, brushed nickel, or a bronze finish.

I would use these over the hockey puck lights because you do not have to worry about cutting into your cabinets, and you don’t have to worry about low voltage transformers, which will have to be replaced at some point.

What is the most valuable home improvement one can make?

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

My wife and I are debating between new windows, a finished basement and an updated kitchen. Which of these will most enhance the value of our home for resell. Any cost estimates would be greatly appreciated as well.

Its depends on how old your house is, if it’s a bit newer, windows or a newer kitchen may not help increase the value,
If you have a Brady Bunch kitchen that’s where your best value will be gained, but also one of the biggest expenses to update.
Paint most of the time is the easiest and cheapest do-it-yourself updates.

Remodeling – Updating Kitchen Cabinets

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Painting your kitchen cabinets can less costly than refacing or replacing your cabinetry. The most expensive remodeling project is by far replacing kitchen cabinets when doing home improvement. If your cabinets are in reasonable condition, but their finish is bedraggled then painting is a good choice. Instead of forking out a fortune on replacing your cabinets, you can upgrade and renew your kitchen’s look for a lot less.

When choosing paint, pick one that is acceptable for your cabinetry. Your local paint store or home improvement store can guide you. Generally speaking, the best paint to use on cabinets is latex, preferably one hundred percent acrylic. It is very durable, sticks easily and is washable.

The best way to apply this type of paint is to use spraying equipment. The finish is much smoother than when applied with a brush. Hardware, paint and home improvement stores rent spray equipment at reasonable prices. However, do plenty of taping to protect any surfaces that you do not wish to paint.

Alternatively, use a good quality brush to paint your cabinets. The higher the brush quality the better. Your local paint store can advise you when selecting the right brush. Basically, synthetic bristles work with some paints and natural ones work better with others. However, avoid using rollers because they leave stippled or roller marks on the surface.

Your first step is to prepare your cabinets, removing each bit of hardware and every door, and marking the location on each one that they came from. Better still, use good quality sandpaper to sand the wood to its bare form. This helps your paint to stick. Also, ensure that you
Remove all remaining residue with mineral spirits.

After doing all the stripping, sanding and cleaning, repair all damages to the doors and cabinets. Putty is great for filling in nicks. However, you will need to let the putty thoroughly dry and sand it well before doing any painting. Then prime the bare wood with an acrylic primer before starting to paint. This will guarantee that the paint will stick to the surfaces.

Usually it is only necessary to use two coats. Let the first one dry thoroughly before proceeding to apply the second coat of paint. Begin your painting with the cabinets first and then your doors. You may wish to use a sawhorse when doing your doors. This will help you reach every edge and avoid drip marks.

Another simple method of improving or updating your kitchen’s look is with new hardware. Handles and hinges are generally reusable, but if you are going for a new and updated appearance then you may wish to purchase new ones, but remember to take the old ones with you to ensure the existing spacings and holes match. Newer hinges will be less stiff with use. Newer handles can give your drawers and cabinets a more modern appearance.

Electrical question: What’s involved with adding this type of lighting to my kitchen?

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

I love the look at the attached URL, especially the lighting above the cabinets.

http://ryzenhomes.com/Photo%20Gallery/kitchen-white.jpg

I wouldn’t attempt this on my own, but just for my information, what’s involved? Would the electrician run a wall switch-controlled outlet above the cabinets and then I’d plug the lights into them, then turn them on and off at the wall switch? Same for the ones under the cabinets?

I know it depends on where you live, but is this expensive?

1) How you operate them is up to you and a few contributing factors that must be evaluated at the site.
2) Cost of fixtures depends on type.
3) Installation could only take anywhere from a couple of hours to a whole day . Depends on the previously mentioned contributing factors.
4) Electrician’s who charge by the hour don’t take those legal short-cuts that make the entire project ugly. (fixtures above cabinets :are they straight? Are the wires twisted together before the wire-nut is installed? Are the wires stabbed into the back of the switch as opposed to being wrapped around the screw? All of these are legal short-cuts,but make the overall job just "ugly". IN MY OPINION
5) Above cabinet lights are different than under cabinet lights.(wattage, style, and installation)
6) If the job is planned correctly, and depending on those few contributing factors, you maybe looking at cost of anywhere from $750.00 to $1,500.00
Keep in mind that I can only go on what what I see and I haven’t seen your kitchen.
Just in case no one has told you, stay away from T-12 fluorescent bulbs. Buy T–8’s or T-5’s fluorescent fixtures. "Be good to Mother earth" stuff. (plus they are doing away with T-12’s)

Kitchen cabinet refinishing?

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

I want to get the kitchen cabinets repainted (bright & airy .. removing the original paint and repaint again). Does anyone know how I go about getting this done through a professional? I mean, would a handyman do this job or a painter or home improvement services?

I would use a professional painter to do the job. If you need some referrals, go to your nearest paint store and ask them for some. Once you get a few to give you bids, ask them for references locally. If at all possible, try to go look at the work. Painting cabinets is a very tedious job. It can also be expensive. If it is done properly, it is worth the money. The only way you can be fairly certain that you will be getting what you expect is to do your homework. There are a lot of painters who will tell you they can do a good job. You’ll eliminate a lot of them by seeing what they have done in the past. Some questions to ask a reference would be:

How long ago was the work done? You don’t want to hire someone that only does one or two sets a year.

Did they stay on schedule? Another words, did they start and finish when they said they would?

Did they clean up after they were done?

Was the bid accurate, or were there other costs that the painter neglected to disclose, or simply didn’t anticipate?

Would you recommend the painter or use them again yourself?

If you aren’t satisfied with the answers you receive, keep looking.

Finally, you should never pay money up front. If a contract is used, then both parties interests are protected if it is written well. A customer should never have to pay money up front, and the only way to avoid a job being abandoned or dragged out for a long time is for payment to be made once the work is complete. Any painter who will not agree to this should not be considered.

how do i get rid of construction debris from a kitchen remodeling project?

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

I live in Brooklyn, New York.

Load all the stuff in a truck and take it to the City Dump. You will have to pay a small fee. You can also call the City Dump and ask for a bulky pick up of your stuff, they may also charge a small fee. If the debris is too much, then rent a bin from the City and when it is loaded, ask them to pick it up or hire any of the locals with a truck big enough and have them dump it at the City Dump.
Good Luck
