How do you know if you’re paying too much for kitchen remodeling labor?

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Is there a formula for figuring this out? We know exactly how much our materials will cost (appliances, tile, cabinets, etc.) but have no idea what to expect when they give us an estimate for labor. Any help would be appreciated!

Definitely get other bids. However, you do want to be comfortable with the contractor you let into your home, and to be around your family. Sometimes, the lowest price isn’t the way to go, and it’s worth paying a little more for the comfort factor of feeling like he will do a good job. It’s impossible to say what the labor should be, since there are TONS of factors in remodeling a kitchen. When you get another bid, make sure – AND THIS IS IMPORTANT – that you are pricing out EXACTLY the same items with all contractors! This means the same appliances, same sink, same faucet, same tile, same countertop – everything. Make sure each contractor includes the same items – demo, new sheetrock, electrical work (be specific about what you are adding), plumbing, etc. If you don’t compare apples to apples, the additional bids you get will be completely irrelevent.

Has anyone used Home Depot for kitchen remodeling?

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

I am in the process of updating my kitchen by replacing the cabinets and countertops. I want granite counter tops and Thomasville cabinets. Has anyone used Home Depot for this project in Rochester Hills, Michigan?

My coworker used the one in Taylor, MI. She paid about $10K and was happy with the results. It’s pretty much luck of the draw because Home Depot uses subcontractors.

Lighting fixtures in my kitchen?

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

my lighting fixtures in the kitchen are leaking some weird green liquid… i had a cover for one of the lights and it held some inside, i pulled it out and checked the wires and they look fine, what could be the problem?

You didn’t say whether these are flourescent or incandescent (light bulb) fixtures. If flouresecent, I’d guess it’s oil leaking from an old ballast. But if they’re incandescent, you’ve got a leak in the ceiling and you need to find it and fix it. If the liquid appears to be green colored water, my first guess is that your light fixture has a faux-brass finish, and the green is from the metal corroding. Another possibility – do you use those colored in-tank toilet freshener things? Could be this is colored water leaking from the toilet tank.

Despite Mark’s comment about "what are the chances of leaking right into the light", this is exactly where you WOULD expect to see a leak (looking at some of his answers, I really have to wonder about his claim of being a 20yr Master Electrician). Water flows to the lowest point, and in your kitchen ceiling, that lowest point is the hole into the light fixture. I’ve walked into places where a bathroom leak upstairs has turned the light fixture globes below into fishbowls.

If you’ve got attic access above the kitchen, crawl up there and start looking for the source of the leak. If you don’t have attic access– first, starting by closely examining all water sources upstairs, checking the toilet tank and all the supply lines for signs of leaking. If you can’t find an obvious source upstairs, you’re going to have to open up the ceiling to access it from below (on the up side, there’s a good chance you’re going to have to open the ceiling to replace damaged drywall anyway).

It’s quite possible that the source of the leak is nowhere near the light fixtures. If you don’t see a puddle (or staining) on the ceiling surface between the joists, starting looking for paths that the liquid could be following to getting to the area — either along a framing member (look at the underside of the rafters above the area, or along a pipe, conduit or cable.

Foot for foot is tile an economic way of DIY home improvement?

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Or does it make sense for a small time home improvement DIY’er to find other routes to improve kitchen-bath

It depends on taste as well. If you can do the job yourself (and I did it many times) it is an excellent way to add substantial value to your property and enjoy something good while using it. I did bathroom floor to ceiling but left the floor as I have original hardwood floorboards. I think it is beautiful and so many others say. In the kitchen I did a partial floor to ceiling in the wet and hot areas. Tiles are fantastic insulators. So in my view tiles are the ultimate answer. Some people don’t want to go that way. To me it make aesthetic and economic sense.

Cabinets – Kitchen Remodeling Planning

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Homeowners who do home repair projects opt for kitchen remodeling. It is understandable because this room is the most used area in any home. It is also a frequently traveled endures a lot. In fact, kitchen remodeling increases your home’s value.

Begin with a budget, including exactly what amount you are able to fork out for the project. You should take into account the length of time you will live in your home – if it is less than five years, set a limited budget because you do not want to waste unnecessary money and not get any return back. Otherwise, allow for much more. It is worthwhile investing in your dream kitchen if you stay longer. No matter your budget’s size, set aside extra funds for unexpected expenses.

To create a sensible budget, you have to have exact costs for each thing. Research each item, the varied prices and quality. Begin your research with estimates for kitchen furnishings, flooring, kitchen cabinets, energy efficient appliances and anything else you want to add.

Start gathering ideas for the theme or look you want. Go to kitchen showrooms and home improvement centers, and view Internet sites and magazines. Then create a file of the ideas you like and what you have learnt, but do not forget to include pricing.

After doing the research, determine how much each part of the job will cost. If you see everything in front of you, it will be much easier to envisage.

Whatever you do you should indulge in at least one or more things that you want, versus need. This may be added flooring or even special kitchen cabinets. Learn to cut cost in one area to save for something special in another area. For instance, if those cabinets are the one’s you want, then you can cut out some of the budget in the flooring area and get vinyl tile squares installed yourself.

You can save a great deal of money if you evaluate which jobs you need a contractor for and which ones you should be able to do by yourself. Most homeowners can manage painting. You can sew your curtains, install flooring, and save all that extra cash for the bigger items you really want in your kitchen.

Once the budget is planned, decide how you plan to pay for everything, without using credit cards. Credit card interest is high and you will pay far more than you budgeted for. It is best to pay as you need things and save money. Cover each phase of your project one step at a time.

Another option is to think about getting a home equity loan, which can offer much lower interest rates than your credit cards. You can invest in what you need and spread your payments over a longer period. In certain circumstances, you may get tax cuts as a result, but whatever the case stick to the project’s budget and do not go stupid with the money from your loan.

What Areas Make The Biggest Impact In Kitchen Interior Design?

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

When planning the layout or just redoing the decorating, taking on a kitchen interior design project is exciting. It is neat to see a project come to life and be finished under your watchful eye. Some people, though, may wonder what types of things they should include in their kitchen design. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Having an island in your kitchen is very popular right now. This is a functional piece to have, and will also increase the value of your home if you are looking to sell down the road. Some people like having their cook top located on their island. Others prefer it simply to be extra counter space. An island is a perfect food prep area. To make it fully functional you could make the entire countertop a butcher block. Installing a sink is also a good idea so you can wash produce right there.

Many people also have a bar type seating area at their island. This way family and friends can gather and visit in the kitchen while the cooking is taking place. You can even purchase islands that roll, so you can move it where you want it. This is perfect for small kitchens or apartments. Overall, you can’t go wrong when you make an island a part of your kitchen design.

The right countertops can make or break your kitchen design. Even if you cannot afford a higher end material like marble or granite, you can choose a synthetic that gives you the look at a fraction of the cost. Granite countertops are the most popular and sought after countertops in kitchen design right now. They are attractive, durable, and functional. They are also, however, very expensive. Many laminates are made to look expensive, and are quite affordable. These also come in any color you can imagine, so you will have no trouble finding one that works with your kitchen.

Lighting is another aspect of kitchen interiors that should not be neglected. Good lighting is essential to a beautiful and functional kitchen. You want to aim for soft, even lighting. Steer clear of florescent lighting, as it is very harsh and unforgiving. It is very industrial, but not in a good way. Look for beautiful overhead fixtures that complement your kitchen’s style. Pot lights are a nice way to achieve even, discreet lighting. They can also be placed on a dimmer to help enhance your mood. Task lighting is also important. This can be accomplished with the use of under counter lighting to illuminate workspaces. Another thing to consider is pendant lighting. Pendant lighting is most often used over an island or bar area.

There are many aspects of kitchen interior design. Look through some magazines and home improvement and decorating websites to get some ideas of what you like. This can help you get started on your kitchen interior design journey. Above all, have fun choosing exactly what goes into your dream kitchen.
